How Committed Are You to Connecting the Dots?

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards.”

This is one of my favorite quotes from Steve Jobs. This is exactly how reflection works in language learning as well. Some people are lucky enough to have the ‘aha’ moment at an early stage of their learning trajectory. However, to be hit by the most powerful one, we have to first try something out and struggle by not knowing where it will take us. By switching your viewpoint and switching it again and again, you will probably experience an enormous moment which will totally change how you see things. You, as an advisor, have to help the learner commit and engage in this process. If a learner experiences an ‘aha’ moment in an advising session and if you had the privilege of observing it, you will see the learner as if they are definitely being ‘hit’ by something. There is a gleam in his eyes and sometimes the atmosphere in the room itself changes. Even if he didn’t seem to have such a moment within the advising session, it might happen when he is alone by himself. In my case, the ‘connecting the dots’ moment often comes while I am commuting on the train or riding a bicycle.
